Volunteer Opportunities

  • Christians Against Poverty Job Club

    Day: Tuesday
    Time: 1PM–3PM
    DBS? No, but you do need to be a Christian

    What the role includes:
    Helping clients with the course, answering questions, guiding the process, being friendly and welcoming. Supporting the Job Club Manager in signposting to other streams of support

    Our goal for the initiative:
    Clients feeling empowered and supported in finding employment.

  • Christian’s Against Poverty Debt Centre Befriender

    Day: Flexible across Tuesday-Wednesday
    DBS? Yes, and you do need to be a Christian

    What the role includes:
    Meeting with our Debt Centre manager and the client in their homme, meeting the client for a coffee, giving emotional support to the client and befriending them. Encouraging them to access support from other streams.

    Our goal for the initiative:
    Clients to feel welcome and supported

  • Foodbank (Packing)

    Day: Wednesday
    Time: 9–11AM
    DBS Required? No

    What the role includes:
    Taking in deliveries, packing away, putting together food parcels and preparing space for The Community Shop on Thursday there may be some heavy lifting – but that is not a requirement

    Our goal for the initiative:
    Meeting crisis needs

  • The Community Shop

    Day: Thursday
    Time: 8AM-12PM (start time can be flexible)
    DBS required? No

    What the role includes:
    Taking in deliveries, setting up the shop, taking clients around the shop and selecting items for them and restocking. There may be some heavy lifting – but that is not a requirement.

    Clients to feel welcome and supported.

  • Kids Matter & Babies Matter

    Day: Thursday
    Time: 1PM—3PM

    DBS?
    Creche team – yes
    Course team - no

    What the role includes:
    Creche team – supervising and playing with young children to allow parents to fully concentrate on the course

    Course team – chatting with parents, making them feel at ease, and encouraging friendships to grow

    Our goal for the initiative:
    Empowering and equipping parents with confidence and building a support network

  • The Big Breakfast

    Day: Saturday
    Time: 9:15AM—12:45PM (roughly once a month)
    DBS? Yes

    What the role includes:
    Kitchen team – prepping the food, cooking the breakfast, washing up.

    Hosting team – making tea and coffee, chatting to and welcoming parents.

    Kids team – running an activity station bringing the fun!

    Our goal for the initiative:
    A space for families to be in the community and feel supported.

“I’ve been part of Gas Street Church for over 3 years, and having retired several years ago from the Financial sector, both in the city of London and locally, I wanted help others to help themselves. Being involved with Gas Street Hope, specifically the CAP Job Club, I have been able to work alongside the vulnerable of society, drawing out their worth and helping them to have hope whilst fulfilling my passion.”

FAQs

  • All volunteers must, at a minimum, be Safer Recruited. The Safer Recruitment process at Gas Street Church involves:

    1. Being on the Gas Street church database (ChurchSuite) - you can register here

    2. Filling in our Safer Recruitment form

    3. Providing two references from people who have known you for at least two years (this doesn’t have to be in a work capacity, friends count)

    4. Completing two modules of Church of England Safeguarding training

    If you are already Safer Recruited by Gas Street Church because you serve on another team, then you don’t need to do it twice. If you are already Safer Recruited by another Church of England church, then you can send us your certificates from the safeguarding training you’ve already done.

    Some roles require a DBS, which we will ask consent for if relevant.

  • We welcome all volunteers! There are specific volunteer roles where we do ask that the volunteer be a practicing Christian, for example where a course has specific Christian content. However lots of our teams are open to everyone, and whatever you believe you’d be so welcome.

  • At Love Your Neighbour Birmingham we do not discriminate based on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. All who need help are welcome.

    There are some streams of help where there are appropriate requirements to access them, for example membership for The Community Shop is tied to location and receipt of means-tested benefits, Stay and Play is only for those accompanying children, etc.

  • This is possible, however we would need you to be Safer Recruited. There are some teams that would be more appropriate to volunteer in, where building relationships with clients is less important, if it is one day a year.
